Yen Ben is New Zealand's main commercially grown lemon crop. It is a cultivar of the Lisbon lemon and was developed in Australia in the late 1930s. Each Yen Ben tree can produce hundreds of juicy flavourful lemons per year.

Yen Ben lemon trees are vigorous growers and can reach heights of up to 3-4 metres.  We top our Yen Ben trees to a manageable height of 1.5m and they thrive. We do this to make picking of lemons and budwood easy. Yen Ben lemons make a tasty limoncello.

Names

Yen Ben  Citrus x limon 'Yen Ben'

Origin

Australia

Mature Size

3mx 2m. Vigorous grower but size can be controlled by pruning and or the pot size.

Foliage

Dark green shiny leaves; evergreen. Small highly scented white flowers in summer.

Soil

Will tolerate clay and sandy soil. Must drain well

Position

Best in a sunny area.  Like all citrus, the sunnier the position, the sweeter the fruit. If you live in a very frosty/snowy area, we recommend that you purchase our patio range so it can be moved inside during winter.

Flavour

Strong lemon flavour - tangy and acidic.

Fruiting

Virtually year round but biggest crop June-October. Yen Ben lemons are typically large and oval shaped. The skin is pale yellow almost with a slight green tinge when ripe. They have a high juice content and very few seeds.

Fruit Uses

Very juicy and the juice level is retained during storage.  Cocktails, marinades, baking, cooking. Rind is thin and the lemon is good source of vitamin C and other nutrients.
