How to Decide Which Citrus Range to Choose?

Choosing the perfect citrus tree for your garden can be overwhelming as we have so many options. To make it more complicated we currently offer many of our trees in four different ranges.

We have detailed information about each variety of tree listed in our catalogue. This guide has been designed to help you make an informed decision about which Range best meets your needs.

1. Garden Range – 4L- 5L Pot

Plant height from the top of the soil 600-900mm

Our Garden Range offers over 70 different citrus varieties in compact 4 to 5L pots. We have something for every tastebud. From classic favourites to rare and exotic finds, our collection is sure to impress.

These versatile trees are perfect for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Whether you have a small patio, a spacious backyard, or want to create an orchard, these citrus trees will thrive. They can be potted into containers, espaliered against a wall, bonsaied, or planted in the garden.

Our Garden Range trees have been nurtured outdoors, making them perfectly suited to New Zealand's climate. If you dream of beautiful citrusy perfumes or tasty fruits our garden citrus trees are the ideal starting point.

2. Established Range - 17L Bag

Plant height from the top of the soil 700-1200 mm

For those seeking a more mature citrus tree, our Established Range is the ideal choice. These trees come in 2 handled 17L grow bags and are 1-3 years older than our garden range. Like the garden range, these trees have grown outside and are very hardy. They will grow rapidly when planted, and because they are older than our garden range, they will fruit sooner.

These citrus trees are perfect if you are wanting a more mature look in your garden or if you want to add a focal point to your outdoor space. Due to their size, the Established Range is too expensive to courier. They can be picked up at the nursery.

Standards

We offer two ranges of standard citrus. The Medium Standard and the Tall Standard Ranges. Before we discuss these, it is important to understand what a standard is.

Standards are plants that have foliage on top of a tall clear stem. The stem doesn’t grow any taller, but the foliage will flower and grow bigger and bushier. Standard plants aren't the same as topiaries. Topiaries are like plant sculptures, all clipped and shaped into fancy designs. Standard plants are more laid-back, with a natural, bushy top. Think of them as the casual chic of the plant world.

Standards are useful for adding height to a garden – planted either in containers or in the ground. For a formal look, site in pairs at either side of the front door or plant down the driveway. They also look great in rows in borders. Standards are versatile additions to the garden. They can be used to create focal points, define spaces, or add height to a planting scheme. Their clean lines and symmetrical forms offer a sense of order and harmony. However, it's essential to consider the plant's mature size and shape when choosing a location, as they require adequate space for their crown to develop fully.

3. Medium Standard Range-14L pot

Plant height from the top of the soil 800-1200 mm

If you're captivated by the elegance of standard trees but have limited outdoor space, our Medium Standard Range is the perfect solution. These shorter, beautifully shaped citrus trees are specifically grown for pots, making them ideal for patios, balconies, or indoor spaces. If your location has very cold winters, you can move your tree indoors during colder months, ensuring your citrus supply continues year-round.

Imagine the delight of sipping fresh orange juice from fruit you've grown on your own patio. Or sitting on your deck enjoying the view and being able to pick a fresh limequat for your G&T or Corona. These compact trees come in lots of citrus varieties, offering a burst of sunshine and sweet or tangy flavours right at your doorstep. With proper care, they can thrive in pots, adding a touch of Mediterranean charm to your living space.

4. Medium Standard Range- 5L pot

Plant height from the top of the soil 800-1200 mm

The cost of transporting the Medium Standard Range - 14L pot, is very expensive. Because of this we also offer the same sized tree in a 5L pot. Shipping the 5L standard is considerably cheaper, and it allows you to use a large pot you have already or to purchase one locally. We recommend 14 L as the minimum sized container.

The Medium Standard Range makes a unique and thoughtful gift for gardening enthusiasts, gardening newbies and foodies.

5. Tall Standard Range-5L pot

Plant height from the top of the soil 1100-1800 mm

For a truly impressive garden statement, our Tall Standard Range is unmatched. These majestic trees boast a tall, single, sturdy trunk topped with a lush canopy of citrus foliage. They are between 1.1m and 1.8m height when they leave the nursery.

Our tall standards are an elegant and impressive addition to any garden. They are a stunning backdrop for outdoor living areas, especially when more than one is planted. Their height allows them to dominate a space, making them ideal focal points. Imagine the stunning visual impact of a lemon tree towering over your garden, its fragrant white blossoms and golden fruit creating a attractive display.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these standards offer bountiful harvests. With proper care, you can enjoy fresh citrus fruit straight from your garden. Whether it's the sweet tang of oranges, the zesty kick of lemons, or the tropical allure of orangequats, Tall Standards provide a delicious and rewarding experience.
