Believed to have originated in Sicily, Villa Franca lemon trees made their way to the US around 1875 and New Zealand later on. While commercially not as prominent as Yen Ben or Eureka lemons, it's prized by home growers for its distinct qualities. Villa Franca lemons are generally larger than average, with a smooth, elongated oval shape.
They're not as abundantly ribbed as other varieties. These lemons are low in seeds and boast a good amount of juicy flesh, perfect for squeezing or adding to dishes. Villa Franca lemon trees are moderately cold hardy, making them suitable for many regions in New Zealand.
