The Meyer Lemon tree is NZ's most popular lemon tree. Meyer lemons originated in China and are a cross between citron and mandarin. Meyer Lemon Trees are very hardy, being more tolerant of the cold and extreme weather conditions than other lemon trees available in New Zealand.
Meyer lemons are round, very juicy, have a fragrant deep yellow/orange skin and the pulp is a dark yellow colour. Meyer lemon trees produce a prolific crop throughout the year once the tree is established.
Names |
Meyer Lemon, Citrus x meyeri |
Origin |
China |
Mature Size |
2mx 1.5m low spreading tree. The size can be controlled by pruning and or the pot size. |
Foliage |
Dark green shiny leaves, with some thorns on new branches. Highly perfumed white flowers with a purple base. |
Soil |
Well-draining, rich, slightly acidic to neutral pH (6-7.3) soil. Compost well |
Position |
Best in an area with regular sun. If you live in a very frosty/snowy area, we recommend that you purchase our patio range so it can be moved inside during winter. Most cold tolerant lemon in NZ. |
Flavour |
Sweeter, less acidic that other lemons. |
Fruiting |
Fruits all year round on established trees. Most prolific in late winter. Large smooth skinned fruit. Lemons are ripe when they turn a deep yellowy orange colour. They can be harvested earlier than this but won't be as juicy or sweet but still perfect to use. |
Fruit Uses |
In NZ the Meyer is often the only lemon in a household so gets used in place of other lemons. It has more juice and a less lemon flavour than others so produces a less intense flavoured lemon pie. Good for drinks, dressings, marinades, baking, and seafood. |
