The Washington Navel Orange Tree is a medium to large orange variety. The skin of the Washington Navel is orange to deep orange in colour, smooth but pebbled that cling to the pulp. The flesh is seedless, firm and easy to separate into its segments. Washington Navel is the most popular eating orange in the world, due to its sweet flavour, no seeds and ease of peeling.
The trademark "navel" at its budding end is due to a genetic mutation where a secondary orange grows within the larger fruit. Washington Navel oranges last well on the tree, extending the eating season by 2-3 months. The tree grows best in a North facing, sunny sheltered position. Ensure you fertilise regularly with citrus fertilizer. Worm, compost or seaweed tea are beneficial for growth and fruit production.
