The pomelo tree is scientifically known as Citrus maxima which means 'biggest citrus'. Pomelo trees are cultivated for their fruits which are the largest of all citrus fruit and can weigh up to 4.5kg. The huge fruit look stunning on the Pomelo tree.

The pomelo fruit is like grapefruit but larger with thicker rinds and visible oil grands. This thick green/yellow rind is easy to peel, and the juicy flesh is surrounded by soft white pith. The flavour of a pomelo is sweet and tangy making them ideal to be used in sweet and savoury dishes.

The pomelo tree, like all citrus, is not native to New Zealand. They thrive in warmer regions with suitable climates for citrus cultivation, such as Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Nelson.  Pomelos don't like frosts. For optimum growth and tasty juicy fruit, it's essential to choose a warm site with adequate sunlight and well-draining soil when planting your pomelo.

Due to the size of the fruit, they are gross feeders, requiring regular applications of citrus fertiliser, compost and water. Pomelo fruit is a low-calorie fruit which provides a good source of vitamin C and fibre. Pomelos, like grapefruit can react with certain drugs.
