The Kawano Satsuma Mandarin Tree produces a mandarin which is known for its sweetness and lack of seeds. The skin is thin and loose, making it easy to peel without damaging the juicy flesh inside. This makes Kawano great for snacking, and for children and people who have difficulty peeling other types of citrus. The fruit, which has a flattened shape, is very juicy with a mild sweet flavour.
Kawano is a heavy cropper producing large crops of excellent fruit in winter, June-August. It is prone to producing in alternate years if it is not thinned. Kawano has a spreading canopy and is a larger tree than other satsumas, but the fruit is a similar size.
Plant in a sheltered, warm, sunny position. Kawano is a stunning patio or standard tree. We love the way the branches have different shapes and grown. When picking the fruit of the Kawano satsuma mandarin, remember don't pull them off the tree, instead cut off with sharp secateurs.
