Homemade Orange Blossom Syrup- Easy & Delightful (Steeping Method)

This homemade orange blossom syrup recipe is lightly floral, delicately sweet, and infused with natural orange flavour. Made using fresh orange blossoms, it captures the subtle aroma of orange flowers without being overpowering. The steeping method releases the blossoms’ natural oils before the infusion is simmered with sugar to create a light, aromatic syrup.

Orange blossom syrup has minimal ingredients and no artificial flavouring. This recipe is an ideal way to preserve the orange blossom season and enjoy fresh orange flavour year-round.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh, unsprayed orange blossoms (about 50–60 blooms)
  • 2 cups filtered or distilled water
  • 1½ cups sugar

Equipment

  • Sterilised glass jar and bottle
  • Fine strainer or muslin cloth
  • Sterilised glass bottle for storage

Method

Step 1: Make the Orange Blossom Water

  1. Harvest blossoms in the morning when they’re most fragrant.
  2. Rinse gently to remove dust or insects.
  3. Remove petals and place the petals in a clean glass jar and pour over the filtered water. Ensure flowers are fully submerged.
  4. Cover and leave to steep for 24–48 hours at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. The longer the steep, the stronger the floral flavour.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine muslin cloth, pressing gently to extract all the liquid. This infused liquid is your homemade orange blossom water.

Step 2: Turn it into Syrup

  1. Pour the orange blossom water into a saucepan and add the sugar. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar has fully dissolved.
  2. Bring to a light simmer and cook for 5–10 minutes, until the syrup is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
  3. Transfer to a sterilised bottle and store in the refrigerator for several months.
