Devine Blood Orange Sorbet- Moro, Tarocco, Sanguinello
Jun 25, 2025
Sorbets are a great way to show off the divine colour and gorgeous taste of blood oranges. They are a stunning dessert. Everyone who has tried them wants the recipe and also access to blood oranges. Moro is the most impressive as people don't expect an orange sorbet to have a deep rose colour. The Tarocco and Sanguinello sorbets are also great.
We have an ice cream maker, and it gets lots of use making various ice-creams and sorbets. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, don’t worry. Use this recipe and see the instructions below for making the sorbet in the freezer.
This is our favorite sorbet recipe for blood oranges, but it works equally well with all oranges.
Ingredients
- 3 cups blood orange juice
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- Optional 4 small to medium mint leaves. Finely sliced
- Optional 1 to 2 tsp gin or orange liquor to taste.
Method
- Zest of 4 small blood oranges (Moro or Sanguinello) or 1 ½ large blood oranges (Tarocco)
- Finely chop zest
- Add zest to the sugar. Rub the two together to release the oils in the zest.
- Juice blood oranges to get 3 cups of juice.
- Pass juice through a sieve
- Put water and sugar into saucepan.
- Heat until sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
- Remove from heat and add blood orange juice
- Cool
- Add to ice cream churner and churn for 60mins or until set.
- Transfer to a container and place it in freezer
NO ICEREAM MAKER, DON’T WORRY, MAKE THE SORBET IN THE FREEZER.
Method
- Complete steps 1-9
- Place cooled juice, water and sugar mixture in dish and put in freezer
- Stir every 20 minutes once ice crystals start forming. This ensures you have a smooth sorbet.
Serving
When serving, remove from freezer 5-10 minutes before dishing up. Due to the stunning colour of blood orange sorbets, we like to serve the sorbet in a glass dish.
