How to Use Citrus - Non Culinary Ideas

People often think of planting/using citrus for culinary purposes only. That is a shame as there are so many other uses for citrus. We have listed below just a few of the many ways you can use citrus trees and fruit for non culinary purposes.

Beautiful Landscaping: Citrus looks outstanding in any landscape. Trees can be planted in the ground or in pots,  in rows of trees, groups of trees or as a specimen tree. Never underestimate the joy you will get from a beautiful citrus tree. We especially love Cipo Orange trees. Their weeping habit and bright orange fruit enhances any landscape.

Decorating: Citrus blossom, fruit and branches look wonderful in floral arrangements. Oranges can be used to make pomanders which are a fun thing to do with children. Dried citrus makes wonderful Christmas tree decorations and wreaths.

Aromatherapy: Citrus essential oils are commonly used in aromatherapy for their uplifting and invigorating properties. These oils can be diffused, added to bathwater, or used in massage oils.

Natural Cleaning Agent: Homemade citrus cleaners can be used to clean and disinfect surfaces, remove stains, and deodorize. The citric acid in citrus fruits makes them effective against grease, grime, and soap scum. The invigorating scent of citrus peels adds a pleasant fragrance to homemade cleaning solutions.

Insect Repellent: While not as strong as commercial repellents, citrus peels or essential oils can be used as a natural insect repellent. Place citrus peels around entry points to deter ants, cockroaches, and other pests.

Potpourri: Dried citrus peels adds a beautiful visual element and a lovely scent to potpourri bowls. Combine them with dried flowers, spices like cloves or star anise, and pinecones for a festive look.

Skin Care: Citrus fruits contain vitamin C and antioxidants that are beneficial for the skin. Citrus juices or peels can be used in homemade facial masks, scrubs, and toners to brighten and rejuvenate the skin.

Body Care: Citrus essential oils can be used in homemade bath products or sugar scrubs for an invigorating and refreshing experience (be sure to dilute properly and do a patch test for skin sensitivity).
